Rape Culture

I am so fucking sick to death of rape culture and horrible people.  So, just for my own benefit, if not for anyone else's, I've decided to compile a list of links to articles that I have found to be useful/horrifying/heartwrenching.  Peruse at your own discretion, trigger warnings like WHOA.

So You're Tired of Hearing About Rape Culture - an amazing article, which links to quite a lot (but not all) of the links I'm putting here.  Very comprehensive, massive trigger warning, will make you sad for days.

Rape and Pregnancy Controversies in United States Elections, 2012 - which is a whole wikipedia article, because it happened that god damned much.

CNN Reports on the "Promising Future" of the Steubenville Rapists, Who are "Very Good Students" - a major news organization is shockingly sympathetic to convicted rapists.  This is mentioned a lot in the first article.

Anonymous Takes On Rape Culture, Leaks Video of Steubenville Jocks Mocking Rape Victim - NSFW, not for the faint of heart.  Horrifying.

Representative Todd Akin on "Legitimate Rape" - fucking lunatic.  Mentioned in the wiki article, here is the full quote.

Richard Mourdock on Abortion: Pregnancy from Rape is "Something God Intended." - also mentioned in the wiki article.  Also horrifying.

Paul Ryan: Rape is a Method of Contraception - not mentioned in the wiki article.  Not really sure why.

Rep. Steve King Says He's Never Heard of a Rape-Induced Pregnancy - also weirdly talks about how rape and kidnapping and abortion are legal, so we should make dog-fighting legal?  Not sure how this makes any sense or is factual at all.

Wisconsin Lawmaker Claims "Some Girls Rape Easy" - I think it's funny that Paul Ryan withdrew backing this guy after he made his comment, but continued to support Todd Akin.

Tom Smith, GOP Senate Candidate: Pregnancy from Rape Similar to Having a Baby out of Wedlock - I'm realizing how anti-GOP this list is becoming.  I honestly didn't mean it to be.  I just so far haven't found any Democrats talking about how a girl deserved it.

When Rape Jokes Aren't Funny - Before CNN got all disgusting and sympathetic towards rapists, they published this lovely article on the Daniel Tosh incident, and why it isn't funny in the slightest.
"When women are told that they shouldn't drink too much or walk alone at night or wear a revealing top, they are being given a guided tour of the boundaries of acceptable female conduct. Women are supposed to understand that these boundaries are policed by rapists. We cross the line at our own risk. And if we are caught, the brutal punishment is one we have earned."

President Obama comments on Rupert Mourdock - says, "Rape is Rape".  Also talks about how a bunch of men shouldn't be deciding what happens with a woman's body.  <3

John Koster, GOP House Candidate: "The Rape Thing" Does Not Excuse Abortions - also states that incest is super rare.  I can tell you from my rape support group that this is not the case.  At all.  In fact it is sickeningly common, but no one talks about it.

Judge Who Says Rape Victim "Didn't Put Up a Fight" Later Apologizes - This is the guy that talked about the body shutting down if a woman gets raped.  Called this case a "technical rape" and not a "real, live criminal case".

Phyllis Schlafly: Husbands Can't Rape Wives - "when you get married you consent to sex."  Actual words.  Also said that rape is just something feminists make up when they want a divorce.

California Appeals Court Tosses Rape Conviction Because the Woman was Unmarried - a gross technicality in the language of the law.

22 Republican Male Senators Vote Against Violence Against Women Act - all women bipartisanly voted for it.  Duh.

Judge to Rape Victim: You Can't Use the Word "Rape" on the Stand - it's old, from 2008.  But this case has stuck with me for a long time due to the utter inherent nonsense it implies.  She also was forbidden to use the words "sexual assault", "assailant", or "victim" as it would be too prejudicial to the defendant.  You know, make you think a rapist was a rapist.

Project Unbreakable - a fantastic Tumblr, rape victims send in a picture of themselves holding a sign with the words of the person who raped them.  Absolutely heart-wrenching.  Not something to be taken lightly, very difficult to read.  But important, as far as awareness goes.

Rape and the Porn Industry - a little Tumblr post about all the rape that goes on in the porn industry.  MASSIVE trigger warning.  I read this shit all the time, and it was still very hard to take.

Defense Lawyer in India Rape Case Blames Victim, Says "Respectable" Women in India are Not Raped - honestly just found this because I remembered the case in the next link, and was searching for it.  The fact that I keep finding this shit is really truly saddening.

11-Year Old Gang Rape Survivor Blamed for "Looking Older", Called Seductive "Spider" - an 11 year old was raped by 20 men, and filmed, and we're blaming her.

Ok.  It's 1 AM, and this is really all I have the stomach for tonight.  Also, just a reminder, my own rapist said I was a "pity fuck", even though I was asleep.  My own friends turned on me, saying I was a whore.  I blamed the individual men for a while, but you really have to look at the culture they are in.  I mean, I still blame the individuals, and I'd like 'em dead, but you know.  Getting a little perspective.  Until next time, when I promise I'll be a bit lighter and less fucking depressing.
